There are not many things that Drake alumni, current students, and prospective students have in common, but one thing can be found at the university bookstore. It’s not an item for sale, but the friendly face of Howard Rescot. His fellow employees also know him as the life of the bookstore.
Howard has been in Des Moines since the mid 1990s and has been affecting the lives of students since then as well. But he hasn’t always been at Drake, and he didn’t graduate from the school either. He was born in Illinois and he remembers the Drake basketball teams from the 1969-1971 era. He also lived in Dallas for a while and recalls reading about the Beautiful Bulldog competition in the Dallas newspaper. He knew Drake was a special place. And when he moved to Des Moines it didn’t take him long to get settled on campus.
“The three big things I love about Drake are one, it’s small, two is the students, and three is the tradition of this university,” Rescot explains. “I can see the tradition growing with the relays and the Beautiful Bulldog pageant, and there are so many wonderful students.” Rescot bonds with students early on and those bonds stick. Many of the perspective students that cross paths with him to purchase Drake spirit wear become actual students. When he sees them later on in their colligate careers he reminds them of when they first met, often shy and with their parents, now not afraid of a Howard hug, or three.
Coworkers of Rescot say he has developed quite a following at the bookstore. He even boasts that he has been invited to several students’ weddings. And when alumni come back there is a lot of catching up to do, because it was difficult to see them off at graduation.
“I will not go to graduation because it’s always sad for me. Because you’re saying goodbye to students that you spent four or five years with, and you saw them walk in scared of their shadow,” Rescot explains. “When they walk out they’re this mature 22-23 year old.” Howard hopes to be around to see the children of students he knows coming to Drake.
If you’re ever in need of a conversation, or a hug, you can find Howard Rescot in the Drake University bookstore.
