Despite the distance, the reality of Brexit came closer to home for Iowans last week.
British Consul General Stephen Bridges spoke to an audience of about 200 at Drake University’s campus. Although his talk — part of the yearly Sussman Lecture hosted by the Harkin Institute — was based around the UK’s upcoming departure from the EU, it also branched onto topics ranging from current events to the still-relevant effects of World War I.
As General Counsel, Bridges’ job is to represent the U.K.’s interests in the U.S. Bridges is based in Chicago and works primarily with the Midwest, including Iowa and the 70-plus British businesses present within the state.
During his Drake visit, Bridges also spoke with a group of about a dozen students at the Harkin Institute headquarters. He got to pick the brains of upcoming political thinkers, and the students got to do the same in turn.
