For most Iowans, the closest they got to Hurricane Harvey was the morning news.
But for Drake University senior Maddy Stokes, Harvey hit close to home.
Stokes, a San Antonio, Texas native, says her family was only 30 miles from the flooding. She also saw the impact in other ways.
“I have a bunch of friends that are actually down in Puerto Aransas and South Padre and Rockport and the devastation is enormous,” Stokes said. “It is so big. It is kind of hard to see because I feel like sometimes people don’t understand what’s the actual magnitude of what happened. A lot of people are looking at it from a marketing and what are businesses going to do standpoint, but not really taking into consideration that this was so big and so bad for so many people.”
