Kim Treanor-Slaybaugh has been raising dogs for as long as she can remember. In many ways, the former president of the English Springer Spaniel Club of Greater Des Moines had family ties to the business.
“My mother used to breed Yorkies,” said Treanor-Slaybaugh. “The cost for Yorkies is so low, especially because they hardly eat any food. Springers, you have to get their hips and eyes checked, they eat more… the cost for the breeder is just so much higher.”
While Treanor-Slaybaugh has been around the breeding culture for years, it wasn’t always Springers that she had her eye on. In fact, she never really intended to get involved with the breed, but a conversation with a landlord changed her mind around 20 years ago.
