The Drake Theatre Community has always produced great works featuring the students in the department. This season we are to expect no less than the standards set in the past. The students in the theatre department hope to receive a good response from the community in and around Drake.
The choice of acclaimed pieces that are being performed this season reflects not only the talent of the students but also the times we live in. The shows in the lineup are ‘The Goat, or who is Sylvia’, ‘Runaways’, ‘Almost Blue’, ‘Next Fall’, ‘The Trojan Woman’ and ‘A Piece of My Heart’.
To a theatre newbie these shows may not portray a particularly strong stance on social issues that the nation and the world are facing. However, ‘The Goat, or who is Slyvia’, for instance questions the limitations of the liberalist and forces the audience to question their own moral perspective.
Next we have the ‘Runaways’, which is both an artistic masterpiece and an amazing social commentary on faction of society that is almost invisible, the runaway children. It certainly is not the average subject matter of a musical, but then what is the standard for the average musical.
These two pieces are merely the beginning of what seems to be a great season ahead. Season tickets have been on sale since July and if these productions seem interesting purchasing the season tickets would be a good idea. Other packages are also offered by the Fine Arts Box Office.
