Natural disasters have reeked havoc on costal states and surrounding countries. The Eta Tau Chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated decided to help Harvey victims from 900 miles away.
Hurricane Harvey struck Texas on August 25th. It was the first of many tropical storms that have hit landfall in the United States. The effects of such an enormous storm are still present today.
The Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. a historically Black sorority, was started in 1908 on the campus of Howard University is an international organization of almost 300,000 members found all over the world who are committed to service both domestic and international.
Starting on September 5th, the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. commenced and international campaign collecting items for Hurricane Harvey victims. Madeline Jones and Maleigha Williams, two active members on Drake University’s campus, joined the effort on behalf of the Eta Tau chapter.
Students, faculty and community members donated money, clothes, shoes, non-perishable food, toiletries, diapers, formula, school supplies and etc… in Olmsted Center and Drake Residents Halls.
“Thank you, to all students and faculty that donated to the Hurricane Harvey Drive,” said Jones. “It was greatly appreciated by Alpha Kappa Alpha. By giving your donations you have not just helped the victims but also giving them a sense of hope for the future.”
The drive has officially ended and items are being shipped to be distributed in Texas, but individuals who would still like to participate can contact firstname.lastname@example.org or email@example.com for more information on the correct place to donate.
