On Saturday, the Drake men’s basketball season, and head coach Niko Medved’s tenure, started off successfully with a 86-73 exhibition win against the University of Minnesota Crookston. The Bulldogs were losing at the end of the first half of the game 41-35. However, the team went on a run during the second half, with help from junior Nick McGlynn’s 18 points and senior Ore Arogundade’s 14 points and six assists in the game.
Medved said the team excelled in certain aspects he has been working on them with during the beginning of his tenure as head coach.
“I thought we have been a team that moved the ball really well and shares the ball. I think I saw a stretch where we really did that,” Medved said. “I thought we did a much better job defensively of helping each other and playing as a team on the defensive end.”
However, Medved said, the film of the game will show the team what they need to work on through the rest of his first season for the Bulldogs.
“You really never find out who you are [at the beginning of the season] … especially a team like us where I being new, a different group of guys,” Medved said. “People will attack you in different ways. You’ve got a lot to learn on the film.”
After the game, Medved and the Bulldogs look forward to the regular season. The first regular season game will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday against Coe College in the Knapp Center. The schedule for the rest of the season can be found on godrakebulldogs.com.
