For over 25 years Combat Hunger, a collaboration event between the Food Bank of Iowa and Star 102.5 has striven to feed Iowans in need. From its east side headquarters in Des Moines the Food Bank of Iowa hosted volunteers from across the Des Moines Metro area in sorting and packaging donated food items.
Volunteers worked in teams to sort food donations into categories like: condiments, pasta, protein, and vegetables. Star 102.5 DJ, Karess Carter, noted that in her sixteen years with thestation the event has only gotten better.
Carter also mentioned that beyond the radio station’s involvement with the event, hunger was a real issue in the Des Moines area year round.
Danny Akright, communications manager for the Food Bank of Iowa says Combat Hunger is an event that requires many hands, from food donation, organizing volunteers, and inventory management making sure that things are done well is the essential element of making Combat Hunger a successful occurrence.
The Food Bank of Iowa’s website in an attempt to increase involvement and awareness offers materials on how to start your own local food drive and canned good collection in your own community. For more information visit https://www.foodbankiowa.org/events/combat-hunger
