Grandview University hosted the final City Council Forum before the Nov. 7th election. Candidates for positions representing Des Moines at Large and Ward 3 answered questions from community members. Connie Boesen and Skip Moore running for at-large positions, Michael Kiernan, Abshir Omar Mohamed, and Josh Mandelbaum running for Ward 3. Former NAACP Regional Director, Kameron Middlebrooks moderated the event.
Candidates were asked what their economic plans were for the city of Des Moines. The question of building a children’s museum downtown was also presented with Candidate Connie Boesen remarking that available space at the Iowa Historical Society may be one option for achieving the goal.
The Des Moines NAACP with Grandview University and some community outreach, collaborated to create the event, which took place in Grandview University’s student center. Graduate members of several National Pan-Hellenic Council organizations also helped to increase a community presence and awareness of the event.
Iowa Representative, Ako Abdul-Samad stressed the importance of civic engagement as it pertained to voting and awareness of elected officials.
