Music lovers in Des Moines might need to keep an eye out for High Schools Girls, a new band created by Drake University students. The group covers pop punk artists of the early 2000s such as the Flaming Lips who Jack Miles, the lead guitarist, says he was listening to while creating the band’s setlist.
High School Girls was created as part of a class project at Drake University. Recently, the group performed at Lefty’s with Station One Records. The show, Venus Rising, focused on feminine strength and empowerment. “It’s about women who just rock,” says lead singer Peyton Johnson. Those women include Molly Brandt, a Drake University alumna, and Lily DeTaeye who also performed.
High School Girls is unsure of what’s next for them, but they are definitely a talent to look out for in the future.
