The owners of the local non-profit record label Station 1 Records are enacting their plans to open a “performing arts laboratory” in the Drake neighborhood in order to stimulate the local creative community.
Tobi Parks and Thom Kutz, the cofounders of Station 1 Records, purchased the space from …. in order to construct a new music venue in the Drake neighborhood. The venue, called xBk, is set to be an “intimate listening space” with a 250 person capacity. It is located at 24th St and University Ave.
Kutz stressed that xBk will place great importance on collaborating with local artists, businesses, and students. This is similar to Kutz’ and Parks’ other project, Station 1 Records, which collaborates with local artists, creators, and Drake University. Parks teaches a January Term course at Drake where students get the opportunity to work directly in the music industry.
The project draws inspiration from venues in artistic communities in Detroit and Brooklyn. In fact, that is where Parks got the name xBk. The name refers to Parks herself, who lived in Brooklyn before moving to Des Moines, but also refers to the creative, artist driven communities that once existed in those cities. Eventually, Kutz hopes that xBk will expand to cities with creative communities similar to Des Moines’.
The building is in the beginning stages of construction, with an opening date set for July 2018.
