On Friday evening, HBO Real Time host Bill Maher went after the rising “woke” tradition, citing how Turner Classic Movies is now posting content warnings on classic films, together with Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Psycho, Gone With the Wind, My Fair Lady, and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.
“I swear to God, I don’t want to talk about cancel culture and this nonsense every week, but I just think people understand how this is a tsunami and how fast the goalposts change almost on a weekly basis,” Maher started.
Former Senator Heidi Heitkamp (D-N.D.) warned “I think we have to be careful. There’s two things Republicans think they are going to get by on — cancel culture in this whole Dr. Seuss stuff where they are reading Green Eggs and Ham proving these senators can actually read. And immigration.” (For the document, it was House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy that just lately learn Seuss on Twitter.)
Then Maher turned to the events he attends:
Taking on “woke” calls for. @BillMaher says it reminds him of Hollywood’s “blacklists” the place now “people go to parties” and “don’t want to talk, they are like ‘can I talk? I don’t know your girlfriend, she might be woke.’” It’s “so Soviet” and “Stalinist.” #RealTime pic.twitter.com/zdHxOEqzdN

BILL MAHER: I by no means thought I would dwell in an period, I keep in mind watching motion pictures in regards to the 50s and the blacklist period when folks would whisper that you just had been you are a communist and all it took was somebody informing on you and us saying they noticed you at a rally or a peace march and you might be branded, and your profession was over otherwise you had been on the blacklist — folks go to events now and they do not need to speak, they are like “Can I talk? I don’t know your girlfriend. She might be woke.” Really, I’m not making this up. This informant factor, it isn’t simply what you do, it is what you do not report. That’s one other method the goalpost moved.
I used to be studying about this man Winston Marshall, the banjo participant in Mumford & Sons. Okay. [Laughter] I keep in mind after they had been a factor for in regards to the time it took to take a piss. This man tweeted out that he favored a e book, it is a e book referred to as Unmasked. I by no means heard of it, you’ve got by no means heard of it, It’s apparently not favorable to antifa as a result of it is criticizing antifa for, okay, folks write books. He tweeted out “Finally had the time to read your important book, you’re a brave man” to the creator. Now he has to step away, everyone seems to be all the time stepping away, from the band. Oh, my god.
This is his apology, so Soviet. “‘Over the past few days, I have come to better understand the pain I caused by the book I endorsed.” What? Did you hit somebody over the pinnacle with it? “I’ve offended not solely lots of people I do not know but additionally these closest to me, together with my bandmates.’ What a bunch of pussies they have to be. ‘And for that, I’m actually sorry.’ It’s so Stalinesque. You know what, how about, I can learn what I would like! I’m a musician! Don’t fear, it will not occur once more!
